The School of Life
Think West Festival
In November 2016, Melbourne’s diverse West welcomed the inaugural THINK WEST festival – a bold celebration of ideas, culture and community.

Curated by The School of Life and powered by Highpoint Shopping Centre, the festival brought together leading voices from across arts, education, sport, culture and commerce. Designed around the guiding themes of wisdom, resilience and social change, THINK WEST tapped into the energy of Melbourne’s western suburbs to explore questions that matter to everyday life.

Over two weeks, more than 40 events unfolded across iconic and unexpected venues. From the Melbourne Planetarium to Footscray Community Arts Centre, from intimate workshops to headline conversations. Festival highlights included:

  • A Night of Awe and Wonder with astronomer Dr Tanya Hill and philosopher Dr Patrick Stokes.
  • Meshel Laurie on Resilience, an honest conversation on failure, humour and bouncing back.
  • Shai Reshef and Matthew Beard on Universal Education, examining access to knowledge in a connected world.
  • Urban Wisdom, a night of storytelling and music featuring Meshel Laurie, Maree Clarke, Rebecca Barnard and Mariam Issa.
  • Walking tours, cultural therapy sessions, exhibitions and community dinners, showcasing the rich diversity and heritage of the West.

The spirit of THINK WEST mirrored the resilience of the Western Bulldogs’ long-awaited 2016 AFL Premiership win; proof that unity, diversity and determination are part of the West’s DNA.

By harnessing local energy and global ideas, THINK WEST established itself as a new kind of festival: one that doesn’t just entertain, but actively contributes to the social fabric of Melbourne’s West.
